When you don’t pay attention to what your emotions are signalling it’s easy for stress, overwhelm and burnout to creep up on you when you least expect it... often debilitating you to the point that your mind just shuts down. Learn to spot the overwhelm signs and how to cope and manage the symptoms.

This is where I was going wrong.

When you don’t pay attention to what your emotions are signalling it’s easy for stress, overwhelm and burnout to creep up on you when you least expect it... often debilating you to the point that your mind just shuts down affecting

your ability to think and react rationally

your ability to perform daily tasks

your relationships as you struggle to connect and be present

So here are 5 signs to watch out for to recognise emotional overwhelm before it leads to chronic stress or even burnout.

1. Having trouble with making decisions or ticking things off your to-do list?

Contrary to popular belief, the inability to focus or complete a task could be a sign that you are overwhelmed, which can show up as procrastination as your body tries to cope.

2. Struggling to sleep and switch off from your business? Experiencing more intrusive thoughts when you go to relax?

You also may begin to withdraw from friends and family and struggle with being present.

3. Your reactions to situation and challenges in your business are excessive where you may lash out, become irritable or have an outburst when the actual situation is insignificant e.g. You can’t find a pen

4. Do you find yourself switching between being full of energy and then suddenly getting sick and unwell, with no real cause? If you are constantly fatigued with no obvious reason or if you have reoccurring aches, pains or physical illness then this could be a sign that your body is showing signs of emotional overwhelm.

5. Lacking motivation and no longer feeling committed to your business is also a sign of emotional overwhelm.

These signs can show up at any point, especially if you are going through changes or stressful periods in your life or business so becoming aware of them is the first step towards prevention.

I know what you are wondering- Ok so I know the signs but what can I do to cope?

Here are 5 quick tips:

1. Slow down! Instead of focusing on the never ending to-do list focus on what is within your control and an activity that you can do right in this moment.

2. Relax and practice mindfulness to clear your thoughts, refocus and reduce the stress you are feeling.

3. Focus on setting up a schedule where you complete one task at a time and complete tasks requiring the most energy and concentration when you are the most alert and at your optimum.

4. Delegate tasks where appropriate- learn to let go of that control to do everything and instead outsource what you can (e.g. cooking, childcare, hiring a VA) so you lessen the mental load on yourself

5. Talk to a professional as often you can get stuck in certain habits and patterns and an expert can guide you with personalised tools and strategies to manage and cope better.
